Deuteronomy 2:37
Context2:37 However, you did not approach the land of the Ammonites, the Wadi Jabbok, 1 the cities of the hill country, or any place else forbidden by the Lord our God.
Genesis 32:22
Context32:22 During the night Jacob quickly took 2 his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons 3 and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 4
Numbers 21:24
Context21:24 But the Israelites 5 defeated him in battle 6 and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strongly defended.
Joshua 12:2-3
Context12:2 King Sihon of the Amorites who lived 7 in Heshbon and ruled from Aroer (on the edge of the Arnon Valley) – including the city in the middle of the valley 8 and half of Gilead – all the way to the Jabbok Valley bordering Ammonite territory. 12:3 His kingdom included 9 the eastern Arabah from the Sea of Kinnereth 10 to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), 11 including the route to Beth Jeshimoth and the area southward below the slopes of Pisgah.
[2:37] 1 sn Wadi Jabbok. Now known as the Zerqa River, this is a major tributary of the Jordan that normally served as a boundary between Ammon and Gad (Deut 3:16).
[32:22] 2 tn Heb “and he arose in that night and he took.” The first verb is adverbial, indicating that he carried out the crossing right away.
[32:22] 3 tn The Hebrew term used here is יֶלֶד (yeled) which typically describes male offspring. Some translations render the term “children” but this is a problem because by this time Jacob had twelve children in all, including one daughter, Dinah, born to Leah (Gen 30:21). Benjamin, his twelfth son and thirteenth child, was not born until later (Gen 35:16-19).
[32:22] 4 sn Hebrew narrative style often includes a summary statement of the whole passage followed by a more detailed report of the event. Here v. 22 is the summary statement, while v. 23 begins the detailed account.
[21:24] 5 tn The Hebrew text has “Israel,” but the verb is plural.
[21:24] 6 tn Heb “with the edge of the sword.”
[12:2] 7 tn Or perhaps, “reigned.”
[12:2] 8 tc The MT reads here, “and the middle of the valley,” but the reading “the city in the middle of valley” can be reconstructed on the basis of Josh 13:9, 16.
[12:3] 9 tn The words “his kingdom included” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
[12:3] 10 sn The Sea of Kinnereth is another name for the Sea of Galilee. See the note on the word “Kinnereth” in 11:2.
