2:37 However, you did not approach the land of the Ammonites, the Wadi Jabbok, ¹  the cities of the hill country, or any place else forbidden by the Lord our God.

Genesis 32:22

Joshua 12:2-3

12:2 King Sihon of the Amorites who lived ⁷  in Heshbon and ruled from Aroer (on the edge of the Arnon Valley) – including the city in the middle of the valley ⁸  and half of Gilead – all the way to the Jabbok Valley bordering Ammonite territory. 12:3 His kingdom included ⁹  the eastern Arabah from the Sea of Kinnereth ¹⁰  to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), ¹¹  including the route to Beth Jeshimoth and the area southward below the slopes of Pisgah.

[2:37]  ¹ sn Wadi Jabbok. Now known as the Zerqa River, this is a major tributary of the Jordan that normally served as a boundary between Ammon and Gad (Deut 3:16).

[32:22]  ² tn Heb “and he arose in that night and he took.” The first verb is adverbial, indicating that he carried out the crossing right away.

[32:22]  ³ tn The Hebrew term used here is יֶלֶד (yeled) which typically describes male offspring. Some translations render the term “children” but this is a problem because by this time Jacob had twelve children in all, including one daughter, Dinah, born to Leah (Gen 30:21). Benjamin, his twelfth son and thirteenth child, was not born until later (Gen 35:16-19).

[32:22]  ⁴ sn Hebrew narrative style often includes a summary statement of the whole passage followed by a more detailed report of the event. Here v. 22 is the summary statement, while v. 23 begins the detailed account.

[21:24]  ⁵ tn The Hebrew text has “Israel,” but the verb is plural.

[21:24]  ⁶ tn Heb “with the edge of the sword.”

[12:2]  ⁷ tn Or perhaps, “reigned.”

[12:2]  ⁸ tc The MT reads here, “and the middle of the valley,” but the reading “the city in the middle of valley” can be reconstructed on the basis of Josh 13:9, 16.

[12:3]  ¹⁰ sn The Sea of Kinnereth is another name for the Sea of Galilee. See the note on the word “Kinnereth” in 11:2.

[12:3]  ¹¹ sn The Salt Sea is another name for the Dead Sea.
