Defeat of King Og of Bashan

3:1 Next we set out on ¹  the route to Bashan, ²  but King Og of Bashan and his whole army ³  came out to meet us in battle at Edrei. ⁴

Blessing on Judah

33:7 And this is the blessing ¹¹  to Judah. He said,

Listen, O Lord, to Judah’s voice,

and bring him to his people.

May his power be great,

and may you help him against his foes.

[3:1]  ² sn Bashan. This plateau country, famous for its oaks (Isa 2:13) and cattle (Deut 32:14; Amos 4:1), was north of Gilead along the Yarmuk River.

[3:1]  ³ tn Heb “people.”

[3:1]  ⁴ sn Edrei is probably modern Deràa, 60 mi (95 km) south of Damascus (see Num 21:33; Josh 12:4; 13:12, 31; also mentioned in Deut 1:4).

[3:3]  ⁵ tn Heb “was left to him.” The final phrase “to him” is redundant in English and has been left untranslated.

[22:4]  ⁹ tn Heb “you must not see.” See note at 22:1.

[22:4]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “and (must not) hide yourself from them.”

[22:4]  ¹¹ tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “be sure.”

[22:4]  ¹² tn Heb “help him to lift them up.” In keeping with English style the singular is used in the translation, and the referent (“the animal”) has been specified for clarity.

[32:36]  ¹³ tn The translation understands the verb in the sense of “be grieved, relent” (cf. HALOT 689 s.v. נחם hitp 2); cf. KJV, ASV “repent himself”; NLT “will change his mind.” Another option is to translate “will show compassion to” (see BDB 637 s.v. נחם); cf. NASB, NIV, NRSV.

[33:7]  ¹⁷ tn The words “the blessing” are supplied in the translation for clarity and stylistic reasons.
