Deuteronomy 32:13

Context

32:13 He enabled him 1  to travel over the high terrain of the land,

and he ate of the produce of the fields.

He provided honey for him from the cliffs, 2

and olive oil 3  from the hardest of 4  rocks, 5

Isaiah 60:5

you will be excited and your heart will swell with pride. 7

For the riches of distant lands 8  will belong to you

and the wealth of nations will come to you.

Isaiah 60:16

Context

60:16 You will drink the milk of nations;

you will nurse at the breasts of kings. 9

Then you will recognize that I, the Lord, am your deliverer,

your protector, 10  the powerful ruler of Jacob. 11

Isaiah 66:11-12

Context

66:11 For 12  you will nurse from her satisfying breasts and be nourished; 13

you will feed with joy from her milk-filled breasts. 14

66:12 For this is what the Lord says:

“Look, I am ready to extend to her prosperity that will flow like a river,

the riches of nations will flow into her like a stream that floods its banks. 15

You will nurse from her breast 16  and be carried at her side;

you will play on her knees.

[32:13]  1 tn The form of the suffix on this verbal form indicates that the verb is a preterite, not an imperfect. As such it simply states the action factually. Note as well the preterites with vav (ו) consecutive that follow in the verse.

[32:13]  2 tn Heb “he made him suck honey from the rock.”

[32:13]  3 tn Heb “oil,” but this probably refers to olive oil; see note on the word “rock” at the end of this verse.

[32:13]  4 tn Heb “flinty.”

[32:13]  5 sn Olive oil from rock probably suggests olive trees growing on rocky ledges and yet doing so productively. See E. H. Merrill, Deuteronomy (NAC), 415; cf. TEV “their olive trees flourished in stony ground.”

[60:5]  6 tn Or “shine,” or “be radiant” (NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[60:5]  7 tn Heb “and it will tremble and be wide, your heart.”

[60:5]  8 tn Heb “the wealth of the sea,” i.e., wealth that is transported from distant lands via the sea.

[60:16]  9 sn The nations and kings are depicted as a mother nursing her children. Restored Zion will be nourished by them as she receives their wealth as tribute.

[60:16]  10 tn Or “redeemer.” See the note at 41:14.

[60:16]  11 sn See 1:24 and 49:26.

[66:11]  12 tn Or “in order that”; ASV, NRSV “that.”

[66:11]  13 tn Heb “you will suck and be satisfied, from her comforting breast.”

[66:11]  14 tn Heb “you will slurp and refresh yourselves from her heavy breast.”

[66:12]  15 tn Heb “Look, I am ready to extend to her like a river prosperity [or “peace”], and like an overflowing stream, the riches of nations.”

[66:12]  16 tn The words “from her breast” are supplied in the translation for clarification (see v. 11).
