Deuteronomy 4:40

4:40 Keep his statutes and commandments that I am setting forth 1  today so that it may go well with you and your descendants and that you may enjoy longevity in the land that the Lord your God is about to give you as a permanent possession.

[4:40]  1 tn Heb “commanding” (so NRSV).

[5:16]  2 tn The imperative here means, literally, “regard as heavy” (כַּבֵּד, kabbed). The meaning is that great importance must be ascribed to parents by their children.

[5:16]  3 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “He” in 5:3.

[6:3]  3 tn Heb “may multiply greatly” (so NASB, NRSV); the words “in number” have been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[6:3]  4 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 10, 18, 23).

[7:16]  4 tn Heb “devour” (so NRSV); KJV, NAB, NASB “consume.” The verbal form (a perfect with vav consecutive) is understood here as having an imperatival or obligatory nuance (cf. the instructions and commands that follow). Another option is to take the statement as a continuation of the preceding conditional promises and translate “and you will destroy.”

[7:16]  5 tn Or “serve” (so KJV, NIV, NRSV).

[25:19]  5 tn Heb “ the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[25:19]  6 tn The Hebrew text includes “to possess it.”

[25:19]  7 tn Or “from beneath the sky.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.
