4:40 Keep his statutes and commandments that I am setting forth ¹  today so that it may go well with you and your descendants and that you may enjoy longevity in the land that the Lord your God is about to give you as a permanent possession.

Deuteronomy 5:16

Deuteronomy 27:2-3

27:2 When you cross the Jordan River ¹²  to the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must erect great stones and cover ¹³  them with plaster. 27:3 Then you must inscribe on them all the words of this law when you cross over, so that you may enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, ¹⁴  said to you.

Deuteronomy 29:13

29:13 Today he will affirm that you are his people and that he is your God, ¹⁵  just as he promised you and as he swore by oath to your ancestors ¹⁶  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

[5:16]  ² tn The imperative here means, literally, “regard as heavy” (כַּבֵּד, kabbed). The meaning is that great importance must be ascribed to parents by their children.

Another option is to take the statement as a continuation of the preceding conditional promises and translate “and you will destroy.”

[25:19]  ⁵ tn Heb “ the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.
