Deuteronomy 4:42

4:42 Anyone who accidentally killed someone ¹  without hating him at the time of the accident ²  could flee to one of those cities and be safe.

Deuteronomy 19:6

19:6 Otherwise the blood avenger will chase after the killer in the heat of his anger, eventually overtake him, ³  and kill him, ⁴  though this is not a capital case ⁵  since he did not hate him at the time of the accident.

[4:42]  ¹ tn Heb “the slayer who slew his neighbor without knowledge.”

[4:42]  ² tn Heb “yesterday and a third (day).” The point is that there was no animosity between the two parties at the time of the accident and therefore no motive for the killing.

[19:6]  ³ tn Heb “and overtake him, for the road is long.”

[19:6]  ⁴ tn Heb “smite with respect to life,” that is, fatally.

[19:6]  ⁵ tn Heb “no judgment of death.”
