Deuteronomy 8:19-20

8:19 Now if you forget the Lord your God at all ¹  and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated. 8:20 Just like the nations the Lord is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you ²  because you would not obey him. ³ 

Deuteronomy 31:29

31:29 For I know that after I die you will totally ⁴  corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in the days to come because you will act wickedly ⁵  before the Lord, inciting him to anger because of your actions.” ⁶ 

Joshua 23:15-16

23:15 But in the same way every faithful promise the Lord your God made to you has been realized, ⁷  it is just as certain, if you disobey, that the Lord will bring on you every judgment ⁸  until he destroys you from this good land which the Lord your God gave you. 23:16 If you violate the covenantal laws of the Lord your God which he commanded you to keep, ⁹  and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, ¹⁰  the Lord will be very angry with you and you will disappear ¹¹  quickly from the good land which he gave to you.”

Isaiah 63:17-18

63:17 Why, Lord, do you make us stray ¹²  from your ways, ¹³ 

and make our minds stubborn so that we do not obey you? ¹⁴ 

Return for the sake of your servants,

the tribes of your inheritance!

63:18 For a short time your special ¹⁵  nation possessed a land, ¹⁶ 

but then our adversaries knocked down ¹⁷  your holy sanctuary.

[8:19]  ¹ tn Heb “if forgetting, you forget.” The infinitive absolute is used for emphasis; the translation indicates this with the words “at all” (cf. KJV).

[8:20]  ² tn Heb “so you will perish.”

[8:20]  ³ tn Heb “listen to the voice of the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[31:29]  ⁴ tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “totally.”

Though the Hiphil of תָעָה (ta’ah) appears to be tolerative in Jer 50:6, elsewhere it is preferable or necessary to take it as causative. See Isa 3:12; 9:15; and 30:28, as well as Gen 20:13; 2 Kgs 21:9; Job 12:24-25; Prov 12:26; Jer 23:13, 32; Hos 4:12; Amos 2:4; Mic 3:5.

[63:17]  ¹³ tn This probably refers to God’s commands.

[63:17]  ¹⁴ tn Heb “[Why do] you harden our heart[s] so as not to fear you.” The interrogative particle is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

[63:18]  ¹⁵ tn Or “holy” (ASV, NASB, NRSV, TEV, NLT).

[63:18]  ¹⁶ tn Heb “for a short time they had a possession, the people of your holiness.”

[63:18]  ¹⁷ tn Heb “your adversaries trampled on.”
