Exodus 12:23

12:23 For the Lord will pass through to strike Egypt, and when he sees 1  the blood on the top of the doorframe and the two side posts, then the Lord will pass over the door, and he will not permit the destroyer 2  to enter your houses to strike you. 3 

Joshua 2:18-19

Joshua 6:22-25

6:22 Joshua told the two men who had spied on the land, “Enter the prostitute’s house 9  and bring out the woman and all who belong to her as you promised her.” 10  6:23 So the young spies went and brought out Rahab, her father, mother, brothers, and all who belonged to her. [12:23]  1 tn The first of the two clauses begun with perfects and vav consecutives may be subordinated to form a temporal clause: “and he will see…and he will pass over,” becomes “when he sees…he will pass over.”

[12:23]  2 tn Here the form is the Hiphil participle with the definite article. Gesenius says this is now to be explained as “the destroyer” although some take it to mean “destruction” (GKC 406 §126.m, n. 1).

[6:2]  18 tn Heb “I have given into your hand Jericho.” The Hebrew verb נָתַתִּי (natatti, “I have given”) is probably best understood as a perfect of certitude, indicating the certainty of the action. The Hebrew pronominal suffix “your” is singular, being addressed to Joshua as the leader and representative of the nation. To convey to the modern reader what is about to happen and who is doing it, the translation “I am about to defeat Jericho for you” has been used.
