Hebrews 2:10

• [Heb 2:10] O Son Of God, Our Captain Of Salvation

  O Son of God, our Captain of salvation, Thyself by suffering schooled to human grief, We bless Thee for Thy sons of consolation, Who follow in the steps of Thee their Chief. Those whom Thy Spirit’s dread vocation severs To lead the vanguard of Thy conquering host; Whose toilsome years are spent in brave endeavors To bear Thy saving Name from coast to coast. Those whose bright faith makes feeble hearts grow stronger, And sends fresh warriors to the great campaign, Bids the lone convert feel estranged no longer, And wins the sundered to be one again. And all true helpers, patient, kind, and skillful, Who shed Thy light across our darkened earth, Counsel the doubting, and restrain the willful, Soothe the sick bed, and share the children’s mirth. Such was Thy Levite, strong in self oblation, To cast his all at Thine Apostles’ feet; He whose new name, through every Christian nation, From age to age our thankful strains repeat. Thus, Lord, Thy blessèd saints in memory keeping, Still be Thy Church’s watchword, “Comfort ye,” Till in our Father’s house shall end all weeping, And every want be satisfied in Thee.

  There’s a battle raging over the land and sea, True to Christ our Captain we will be; Satan’s hosts are mighty, fighting for ruin and sin, But in this great conflict right is sure to win. • [Rev 12:7] Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin?

  Where shall my wondering soul begin? How shall I all to heaven aspire? A slave redeemed from death and sin, A brand plucked from eternal fire, How shall I equal triumphs raise, Or sing my great Deliverer’s praise? O how shall I the goodness tell, Father, which Thou to me hast showed? That I, a child of wrath and hell, I should be called a child of God, Should know, should feel my sins forgiven, Blessed with this antepast of Heaven! And shall I slight my Father’s love? Or basely fear His gifts to own? Unmindful of His favors prove? Shall I, the hallowed cross to shun, Refuse His righteousness to impart, By hiding it within my heart? No! though the ancient dragon rage, And call forth all his host to war, Though earth’s self-righteous sons engage Them and their god alike I dare; Jesus, the sinner’s friend, proclaim; Jesus, to sinners still the same. Outcasts of men, to you I call, Harlots, and publicans, and thieves! He spreads His arms to embrace you all; Sinners alone His grace receives; No need of Him the righteous have; He came the lost to seek and save. Come, O my guilty brethren, come, Groaning beneath your load of sin, His bleeding heart shall make you room, His open side shall take you in; He calls you now, invites you home; Come, O my guilty brethren, come! For you the purple current flowed In pardons from His wounded side, Languished for you the eternal God, For you the Prince of glory died: Believe, and all your sin’s forgiven; Only believe, and yours is Heaven!

  Come, Thou Conqueror of the nations, Now on Thy white horse appear; Earthquakes, famines, desolations Signify Thy kingdom near: True and faithful! Stablish Thy dominion here. Thine the kingdom, power, and glory; Thine the ransomed nations are. Let the heathen fall before Thee, Let the isles Thy power declare. Judge and conquer All mankind in righteous war. Thee let all mankind admire, Object of our joy and dread! Flame Thine eyes with heavenly fire, Many crowns upon Thy head. But Thine essence None, except Thyself, can read. Yet we know our Mediator, By the Father’s grace bestowed; Meanly clothed in human nature, Thee we call the Word of God. Flesh Thy garment, Dipped in Thy own sacred blood. Captain, God of our salvation, Thou Who hast the wine press trod, Borne the Almighty’s indignation, Quenched the fiercest wrath of God, Take the kingdom, Claim the purchase of Thy blood. On Thy thigh and clothing written, Show the world Thy heavenly Name, That, with loving wonder smitten, All may glorify the Lamb. All adore Thee, All the Lord of hosts proclaim.   Behold one day a wondrous scene: There rode a Man of lowly mien, Along the dusty way, along the dusty way; The people thronged Him as He passed, Palm branches in His way they cast, And cried, “Hosanna to the King, today!” Refrain Crown Him!   Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne. Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown Him the virgin’s Son, the God incarnate born, Whose arm those crimson trophies won which now His brow adorn; Fruit of the mystic rose, as of that rose the stem; The root whence mercy ever flows, the Babe of Bethlehem. Crown Him the Son of God, before the worlds began, And ye who tread where He hath trod, crown Him the Son of Man; Who every grief hath known that wrings the human breast, And takes and bears them for His own, that all in Him may rest. Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed over the grave, And rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save. His glories now we sing, who died, and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. Crown Him the Lord of peace, whose power a scepter sways From pole to pole, that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise. No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright. Crown Him the Lord of Heaven, enthroned in worlds above, Crown Him the King to Whom is given the wondrous name of Love. Crown Him with many crowns, as thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, for He is King of all. Crown Him the Lord of lords, who over all doth reign, Who once on earth, the incarnate Word, for ransomed sinners slain, Now lives in realms of light, where saints with angels sing Their songs before Him day and night, their God, Redeemer, King. Crown Him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou has died for me; Thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity.

  Our Lord is now rejected, And by the world disowned, By the many still neglected, And by the few enthroned, But soon He’ll come in glory, The hour is drawing nigh, For the crowning day is coming by and by.   O heavenly Word, eternal Light, Begotten of the Father’s might, Who, in these latter days, art born For succor to a world forlorn; Our hearts enlighten from above, And kindle with Thine own true love; That we, who hear Thy call today, May cast earth’s vanities away. And when as Judge Thou drawest nigh, The secrets of all hearts to try; When sinners meet their awful doom, And saints attain their heavenly home; O let us not, for evil past, Be driven from Thy face at last; But with the blessèd evermore Behold Thee, love Thee, and adore.
