Ezekiel 16:31

16:31 When you built your chamber at the head of every street and put up your pavilion in every public square, you were not like a prostitute, because you scoffed at payment. 1

Every heart will melt with fear and every hand will be limp; everyone 12  will faint and every knee will be wet with urine.’ 13  Pay attention – it is coming and it will happen, declares the sovereign Lord.”

23:5 “Oholah engaged in prostitution while she was mine. 14  She lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians 15  – warriors 16  23:6 clothed in blue, governors and officials, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on horses. 23:7 She bestowed her sexual favors on them; all of them were the choicest young men of Assyria. She defiled herself with all whom she desired 17  – with all their idols.

23:11 “Her sister Oholibah watched this, 18  but she became more corrupt in her lust than her sister had been, and her acts of prostitution were more numerous than those of her sister. 23:12 She lusted after the Assyrians – governors and officials, warriors in full armor, horsemen riding on horses, all of them desirable young men.

Ezekiel 33:3-7

Context
33:3 He sees the sword coming against the land, blows the trumpet, 19  and warns the people, 20  33:4 but there is one who hears the sound of the trumpet yet does not heed the warning. Then the sword comes and sweeps him away. He will be responsible for his own death. 21  33:5 He heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, so he is responsible for himself. 22  If he had heeded the warning, he would have saved his life. 33:6 But suppose the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people. Then the sword comes and takes one of their lives. He is swept away for his iniquity, 23  but I will hold the watchman accountable for that person’s death.’ 24 

33:7 “As for you, son of man, I have made you a watchman 25  for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you must warn them on my behalf.

[16:31]  1 tn The Hebrew term, which also occurs in vv. 34 and 41 of this chapter, always refers to the payment of a prostitute (Deut 23:19; Isa 23:17; Hos 9:1; Mic 1:7).

Perhaps here he exaggerates for rhetorical effect in an effort to subdue any false optimism. See L. C. Allen, Ezekiel (WBC), 2:25-26; D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 1:669-70; and W. Zimmerli, Ezekiel (Hermeneia), 1:424-25.

[21:4]  9 tn Heb “all flesh” (also in the following verse).

[21:4]  10 tn Heb “Negev.” The Negev is the south country.

[21:6]  11 tn Heb “breaking loins.”

[21:7]  12 tn Heb “every spirit will be dim.”

The Hebrew word for “iniquity” may also mean the “punishment” for iniquity or “guilt” of iniquity.

[33:7]  25 sn Jeremiah (Jer 6:17) and Habakkuk (Hab 2:1) also served in the role of a watchman.
