Ezekiel 26:17

26:17 They will sing this lament over you: ¹ 

“‘How you have perished – you have vanished ²  from the seas,

O renowned city, once mighty in the sea,

she and her inhabitants, who spread their terror! ³ 

Ezekiel 32:24-25

32:24 “Elam is there with all her hordes around her grave; all of them struck down by the sword. They went down uncircumcised to the lower parts of the earth, those who spread terror in the land of the living. Now they will bear their shame with those who descend to the pit. 32:25 Among the dead they have made a bed for her, along with all her hordes around her grave. ⁴  All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword, for their terror had spread in the land of the living. They bear their shame along with those who descend to the pit; they are placed among the dead.

Ezekiel 36:5

36:5 therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says: Surely I have spoken in the fire of my zeal against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, who with great joy and utter contempt have made my land their property and prey, because of its pasture.’

Ezekiel 6:13

6:13 Then you will know that I am the Lord – when their dead lie among their idols around their altars, on every high hill and all the mountaintops, under every green tree and every leafy oak, ⁵  the places where they have offered fragrant incense to all their idols.

Ezekiel 31:14

31:14 For this reason no watered trees will grow so tall; their tops will not reach into the clouds, nor will the well-watered ones grow that high. ⁶  For all of them have been appointed to die in the lower parts of the earth; ⁷  they will be among mere mortals, ⁸  with those who descend to the pit.

[26:17]  ¹ tn Heb “and they will lift up over you a lament and they will say to you.”

[26:17]  ² tn Heb “O inhabitant.” The translation follows the LXX and understands a different Hebrew verb, meaning “cease,” behind the consonantal text. See L. C. Allen, Ezekiel [WBC], 2:72, and D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 2:43.

[26:17]  ³ tn Heb “she and her inhabitants who placed their terror to all her inhabitants.” The relationship of the final prepositional phrase to what precedes is unclear. The preposition probably has a specifying function here, drawing attention to Tyre’s inhabitants as the source of the terror mentioned prior to this. In this case, one might paraphrase verse 17b: “she and her inhabitants, who spread their terror; yes, her inhabitants (were the source of this terror).”

[32:25]  ⁴ tn Heb “around him her graves,” but the expression is best emended to read “around her grave” (see vv. 23-24).

[6:13]  ⁷ sn By referring to every high hill…all the mountaintops…under every green tree and every leafy oak Ezekiel may be expanding on the phraseology of Deut 12:2 (see 1 Kgs 14:23; 2 Kgs 16:4; 17:10; Jer 2:20; 3:6, 13; 2 Chr 28:4).

[31:14]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “and they will not stand to them in their height, all the drinkers of water.”

[31:14]  ¹¹ tn Heb “for death, to the lower earth.”

[31:14]  ¹² tn Heb “the sons of men.”
