Galatians 3:3

3:3 Are you so foolish? Although you began ¹  with ²  the Spirit, are you now trying to finish ³  by human effort? ⁴ 

Galatians 5:16

5:16 But I say, live ⁵  by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. ⁶ 

Galatians 6:16

6:16 And all who will behave ⁷  in accordance with this rule, peace and mercy be on them, and on the Israel of God. ⁸ 

[3:3]  ¹ tn Grk “Having begun”; the participle ἐναρξάμενοι (enarxamenoi) has been translated concessively.

[3:3]  ² tn Or “by the Spirit.”

[3:3]  ³ tn The verb ἐπιτελεῖσθε (epiteleisqe) has been translated as a conative present (see ExSyn 534). This is something the Galatians were attempting to do, but could not accomplish successfully.

[5:16]  ⁵ tn Grk “walk” (a common NT idiom for how one conducts one’s life or how one behaves).

[6:16]  ⁹ tn The same Greek verb, στοιχέω (stoicew), occurs in Gal 5:25.

[6:16]  ¹⁰ tn The word “and” (καί) can be interpreted in two ways: (1) It could be rendered as “also” which would indicate that two distinct groups are in view, namely “all who will behave in accordance with this rule” and “the Israel of God.” Or (2) it could be rendered “even,” which would indicate that “all who behave in accordance with this rule” are “the Israel of God.” In other words, in this latter view, “even” = “that is.”
