Galatians 4:6

4:6 And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, who calls ¹  “Abba! ²  Father!”

Galatians 5:15

5:15 However, if you continually bite and devour one another, ³  beware that you are not consumed ⁴  by one another.

[4:6]  ¹ tn Grk “calling.” The participle is neuter indicating that the Spirit is the one who calls.

[4:6]  ² tn The term “Abba” is the Greek transliteration of the Aramaic אַבָּא (’abba’), literally meaning “my father” but taken over simply as “father,” used in prayer and in the family circle, and later taken over by the early Greek-speaking Christians (BDAG 1 s.v. ἀββα).

[5:15]  ³ tn That is, “if you are harming and exploiting one another.” Paul’s metaphors are retained in most modern translations, but it is possible to see the meanings of δάκνω and κατεσθίω (daknw and katesqiw, L&N 20.26 and 88.145) as figurative extensions of the literal meanings of these terms and to translate them accordingly. The present tenses here are translated as customary presents (“continually…”).
