14:12 They also took Abram’s nephew ¹  Lot and his possessions when ²  they left, for Lot ³  was living in Sodom. ⁴

18:26 So the Lord replied, “If I find in the city of Sodom fifty godly people, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

Genesis 49:6

49:6 O my soul, do not come into their council,

do not be united to their assembly, my heart, ⁵ 

for in their anger they have killed men,

and for pleasure they have hamstrung oxen.

[14:12]  ¹ tn Heb “Lot the son of his brother.”

[14:12]  ² tn Heb “and.”

[14:12]  ³ tn Heb “he”; the referent (Lot) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[14:12]  ⁴ tn This disjunctive clause is circumstantial/causal, explaining that Lot was captured because he was living in Sodom at the time.

[49:6]  ⁵ tn The Hebrew text reads “my glory,” but it is preferable to repoint the form and read “my liver.” The liver was sometimes viewed as the seat of the emotions and will (see HALOT 456 s.v. II כָּבֵד) for which the heart is the modern equivalent.
