Genesis 16:5

16:5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You have brought this wrong on me! 1  I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, 2  but when she realized 3  that she was pregnant, she despised me. 4  May the Lord judge between you and me!” 5

[22:9]  6 sn Abraham built an altar there. The theme of Abraham’s altar building culminates here. He has been a faithful worshiper. Will he continue to worship when called upon to make such a radical sacrifice?

This text has given rise to an important theme in Judaism known as the Aqedah, from the Hebrew word for “binding.” When sacrifices were made in the sanctuary, God remembered the binding of Isaac, for which a substitute was offered. [42:28]  51 tn Heb “and their heart went out.” Since this expression is used only here, the exact meaning is unclear. The following statement suggests that it may refer to a sudden loss of emotional strength, so “They were dismayed” adequately conveys the meaning (cf. NRSV); NIV has “Their hearts sank.”

[42:28]  52 tn Heb “and they trembled, a man to his neighbor.”

[42:28]  53 tn Heb “What is this God has done to us?” The demonstrative pronoun (“this”) adds emphasis to the question.
