19:27 Abraham got up early in the morning and went ¹  to the place where he had stood before the Lord.

21:31 That is why he named that place ²  Beer Sheba, ³  because the two of them swore ⁴  an oath there.

28:19 He called that place Bethel, ⁵  although the former name of the town was Luz.

Genesis 32:2

32:2 When Jacob saw them, he exclaimed, ⁶  “This is the camp of God!” So he named that place Mahanaim. ⁷ 

[19:27]  ¹ tn The words “and went” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[21:31]  ² tn Heb “that is why he called that place.” Some translations render this as an impersonal passive, “that is why that place was called.”

[21:31]  ³ sn The name Beer Sheba (בְּאֵר שָׁבַע, bÿ’er shava’) means “well of the oath” or “well of the seven.” Both the verb “to swear” and the number “seven” have been used throughout the account. Now they are drawn in as part of the explanation of the significance of the name.

[21:31]  ⁴ sn The verb forms a wordplay with the name Beer Sheba.

[28:19]  ³ tn The name Bethel means “house of God” in Hebrew (see v. 17).

[32:2]  ⁴ tn Heb “and Jacob said when he saw them.”

[32:2]  ⁵ sn The name Mahanaim apparently means “two camps.” Perhaps the two camps were those of God and of Jacob.
