Genesis 19:38

19:38 The younger daughter also gave birth to a son and named him Ben-Ammi. ¹  He is the ancestor of the Ammonites of today.

Genesis 19:33

19:33 So that night they made their father drunk with wine, ²  and the older daughter ³  came and had sexual relations with her father. ⁴  But he was not aware that she had sexual relations with him and then got up. ⁵ 

Genesis 24:15

24:15 Before he had finished praying, there came Rebekah ⁶  with her water jug on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah (Milcah was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor). ⁷ 

[19:38]  ¹ sn The name Ben-Ammi means “son of my people.” Like the account of Moab’s birth, this story is probably included in the narrative to portray the Ammonites, another perennial enemy of Israel, in a negative light.

[19:33]  ² tn Heb “drink wine.”

[19:33]  ³ tn Heb “the firstborn.”

[19:33]  ⁴ tn Heb “and the firstborn came and lied down with her father.” The expression “lied down with” here and in the following verses is a euphemism for sexual relations.

[19:33]  ⁵ tn Heb “and he did not know when she lay down and when she arose.”

[24:15]  ³ tn Heb “Look, Rebekah was coming out!” Using the participle introduced with הִנֵּה (hinneh, “look”), the narrator dramatically transports the audience back into the event and invites them to see Rebekah through the servant’s eyes.

[24:15]  ⁴ tn Heb “Look, Rebekah was coming out – [she] who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham – and her jug [was] on her shoulder.” The order of the clauses has been rearranged in the translation for stylistic reasons.
