[19:38]  1 sn The name Ben-Ammi means “son of my people.” Like the account of Moab’s birth, this story is probably included in the narrative to portray the Ammonites, another perennial enemy of Israel, in a negative light.

[25:18]  2 tn Heb “they”; the referent (Ishmael’s descendants) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[25:18]  3 tn Heb “which is by the face of,” or near the border. The territory ran along the border of Egypt.

[25:18]  5 sn The name Asshur refers here to a tribal area in the Sinai.

While there is some ambiguity about the meaning, the line probably does give a hint of the Ishmaelite-Israelite conflicts to come.

[34:8]  3 tn Heb “Shechem my son, his soul is attached to your daughter.” The verb means “to love” in the sense of being emotionally attached to or drawn to someone. This is a slightly different way of saying what was reported earlier (v. 3). However, there is no mention here of the offense. Even though Hamor is speaking to Dinah’s brothers, he refers to her as their daughter (see v. 17).

[37:32]  4 tn Heb “and they sent the special tunic and they brought [it] to their father.” The text as it stands is problematic. It sounds as if they sent the tunic on ahead and then came and brought it to their father. Some emend the second verb to a Qal form and read “and they came.” In this case, they sent the tunic on ahead.

[37:33]  5 sn A wild animal has eaten him. Jacob draws this conclusion on his own without his sons actually having to lie with their words (see v. 20). Dipping the tunic in the goat’s blood was the only deception needed.

[44:30]  6 tn Heb “his life is bound up in his life.”

[48:6]  7 tn Or “you fathered.”

[48:6]  8 tn Heb “called” or “named.”

[48:6]  9 sn Listed under the names of their brothers in their inheritance. This means that any subsequent children of Joseph will be incorporated into the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh.

[49:28]  8 tn Heb “All these.”

[49:28]  9 tn Heb “and he blessed them, each of whom according to his blessing, he blessed them.”
