19:38 The younger daughter also gave birth to a son and named him Ben-Ammi. ¹  He is the ancestor of the Ammonites of today.

Genesis 50:23

50:23 Joseph saw the descendants of Ephraim to the third generation. ²  He also saw the children of Makir the son of Manasseh; they were given special inheritance rights by Joseph. ³ 

[19:38]  ¹ sn The name Ben-Ammi means “son of my people.” Like the account of Moab’s birth, this story is probably included in the narrative to portray the Ammonites, another perennial enemy of Israel, in a negative light.

[50:23]  ² tn Heb “saw Ephraim, the children of the third.”

[50:23]  ³ tn Heb “they were born on the knees of Joseph.” This expression implies their adoption by Joseph, which meant that they received an inheritance from him.
