Context19:5 They shouted to Lot, 1 “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so we can have sex 2 with them!”
Genesis 19:24-25
Context19:24 Then the Lord rained down 3 sulfur and fire 4 on Sodom and Gomorrah. It was sent down from the sky by the Lord. 5 19:25 So he overthrew those cities and all that region, 6 including all the inhabitants of the cities and the vegetation that grew 7 from the ground.
[19:5] 1 tn The Hebrew text adds “and said to him.” This is redundant in English and has not been translated for stylistic reasons.
[19:5] 2 tn The Hebrew verb יָדַע (yada’, “to know”) is used here in the sense of “to lie with” or “to have sex with” (as in Gen 4:1). That this is indeed the meaning is clear from Lot’s warning that they not do so wickedly, and his willingness to give them his daughters instead.
[19:24] 3 tn The disjunctive clause signals the beginning of the next scene and highlights God’s action.
