Genesis 2:2

2:2 By ¹  the seventh day God finished the work that he had been doing, ²  and he ceased ³  on the seventh day all the work that he had been doing.

Genesis 18:8

18:8 Abraham ⁴  then took some curds and milk, along with the calf that had been prepared, and placed the food ⁵  before them. They ate while ⁶  he was standing near them under a tree.

[2:2]  ³ tn The Hebrew term שָׁבַּת (shabbat) can be translated “to rest” (“and he rested”) but it basically means “to cease.” This is not a rest from exhaustion; it is the cessation of the work of creation.

[18:8]  ⁵ tn The words “the food” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. In the Hebrew text the verb has no stated object.
