Genesis 21:30

21:30 He replied, “You must take these seven ewe lambs from my hand as legal proof ¹  that I dug this well.” ² 

Genesis 43:9

43:9 I myself pledge security ³  for him; you may hold me liable. If I do not bring him back to you and place him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life. ⁴ 

Genesis 49:24

49:24 But his bow will remain steady,

and his hands ⁵  will be skillful;

because of the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob,

because of ⁶  the Shepherd, the Rock ⁷  of Israel,

[21:30]  ² sn This well. Since the king wanted a treaty to share in Abraham’s good fortune, Abraham used the treaty to secure ownership of and protection for the well he dug. It would be useless to make a treaty to live in this territory if he had no rights to the water. Abraham consented to the treaty, but added his rider to it.

[43:9]  ³ tn The pronoun before the first person verbal form draws attention to the subject and emphasizes Judah’s willingness to be personally responsible for the boy.

[43:9]  ⁴ sn I will bear the blame before you all my life. It is not clear how this would work out if Benjamin did not come back. But Judah is offering his life for Benjamin’s if Benjamin does not return.

[49:24]  ⁵ tn Heb “the arms of his hands.”

[49:24]  ⁶ tn Heb “from there,” but the phrase should be revocalized and read “from [i.e., because of] the name of.”

[49:24]  ⁷ tn Or “Stone.”
