23:11 “No, my lord! Hear me out. I sell 1  you both the field and the cave that is in it. 2  In the presence of my people 3  I sell it to you. Bury your dead.”

Genesis 35:12

35:12 The land I gave 4  to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you. To your descendants 5  I will also give this land.”

[23:11]  1 tn Heb “give.” The perfect tense has here a present nuance; this is a formal, legally binding declaration. Abraham asked only for a burial site/cave within the field; Ephron agrees to sell him the entire field.

[23:11]  2 tn The Hebrew text adds “to you I give [i.e., sell] it.” This is redundant in English and has not been translated for stylistic reasons.

[23:11]  3 tn Heb “in the presence of the sons of my people.”

[35:12]  4 tn The Hebrew verb translated “gave” refers to the Abrahamic promise of the land. However, the actual possession of that land lay in the future. The decree of the Lord made it certain; but it has the sense “promised to give.”

[35:12]  5 tn Heb “and to your offspring after you.”
