23:11 “No, my lord! Hear me out. I sell ¹  you both the field and the cave that is in it. ²  In the presence of my people ³  I sell it to you. Bury your dead.”

Genesis 38:26

38:26 Judah recognized them and said, “She is more upright ⁴  than I am, because I wouldn’t give her to Shelah my son.” He did not have sexual relations with her ⁵  again.

[23:11]  ¹ tn Heb “give.” The perfect tense has here a present nuance; this is a formal, legally binding declaration. Abraham asked only for a burial site/cave within the field; Ephron agrees to sell him the entire field.

[23:11]  ² tn The Hebrew text adds “to you I give [i.e., sell] it.” This is redundant in English and has not been translated for stylistic reasons.

[23:11]  ³ tn Heb “in the presence of the sons of my people.”

[38:26]  ⁴ tn Traditionally “more righteous”; cf. NCV, NRSV, NLT “more in the right.”

[38:26]  ⁵ tn Heb “and he did not add again to know her.” Here “know” is a euphemism for sexual intercourse.
