23:8 Then he said to them, “If you agree ¹  that I may bury my dead, ²  then hear me out. ³  Ask ⁴  Ephron the son of Zohar

25:9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah ⁵  near Mamre, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar, the Hethite.

[23:8]  ¹ tn Heb “If it is with your purpose.” The Hebrew noun נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh) here has the nuance “purpose” or perhaps “desire” (see BDB 661 s.v. נֶפֶשׁ).

[23:8]  ² tn Heb “bury my dead out of my sight.” The last phrase “out of my sight” has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[23:8]  ³ tn Or “hear me.”

[23:8]  ⁴ tn Heb “intercede for me with.”

[25:9]  ⁵ sn The cave of Machpelah was the place Abraham had purchased as a burial place for his wife Sarah (Gen 23:17-18).
