Genesis 24:12

24:12 He prayed, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, guide me today. ¹  Be faithful ²  to my master Abraham.

Genesis 27:20

27:20 But Isaac asked his son, “How in the world ³  did you find it so quickly, ⁴  my son?” “Because the Lord your God brought it to me,” ⁵  he replied. ⁶ 

[24:12]  ¹ tn Heb “make it happen before me today.” Although a number of English translations understand this as a request for success in the task (cf. NASB, NIV, NRSV) it is more likely that the servant is requesting an omen or sign from God (v. 14).

[24:12]  ² tn Heb “act in loyal love with” or “show kindness to.”

[27:20]  ³ tn Heb “What is this?” The enclitic pronoun “this” adds emphasis to the question, which is comparable to the English rhetorical question, “How in the world?”

[27:20]  ⁴ tn Heb “you hastened to find.” In translation the infinitive becomes the main verb and the first verb becomes adverbial.

[27:20]  ⁵ tn Heb “caused to meet before me.”

[27:20]  ⁶ tn Heb “and he said, ‘Because the Lord your God….’” The order of the introductory clause and the direct discourse has been rearranged in the translation for stylistic reasons.
