Genesis 24:49

Context
24:49 Now, if you will show faithful love to my master, tell me. But if not, tell me as well, so that I may go on my way.” 1

Genesis 31:29

Context
31:29 I have 2  the power to do you harm, but the God of your father told me last night, ‘Be careful 3  that you neither bless nor curse Jacob.’ 4

Genesis 43:7

Context

43:7 They replied, “The man questioned us 5  thoroughly 6  about ourselves and our family, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ 7  So we answered him in this way. 8  How could we possibly know 9  that he would say, 10  ‘Bring your brother down’?”

Genesis 44:26

Context
44:26 But we replied, ‘We cannot go down there. 11  If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go, 12  for we won’t be permitted to see the man’s face if our youngest brother is not with us.’

Genesis 47:6

Context
47:6 The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best region of the land. They may live in the land of Goshen. If you know of any highly capable men 13  among them, put them in charge 14  of my livestock.”

[24:49]  1 tn Heb “and I will turn to the right or to the left.” The expression apparently means that Abraham’s servant will know where he should go if there is no further business here.

[31:29]  2 tn Heb “there is to my hand.”

[31:29]  3 tn Heb “watch yourself,” which is a warning to be on guard against doing something that is inappropriate.

[31:29]  4 tn Heb “from speaking with Jacob from good to evil.” The precise meaning of the expression, which occurs only here and in v. 24, is uncertain. See the note on the same phrase in v. 24.

[43:7]  3 tn The word “us” has been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[43:7]  4 tn The infinitive absolute with the perfect verbal form emphasizes that Joseph questioned them thoroughly.

[43:7]  5 sn The report given here concerning Joseph’s interrogation does not exactly match the previous account where they supplied the information to clear themselves (see 42:13). This section may reflect how they remembered the impact of his interrogation, whether he asked the specific questions or not. That may be twisting the truth to protect themselves, not wanting to admit that they volunteered the information. (They admitted as much in 42:31, but now they seem to be qualifying that comment.) On the other hand, when speaking to Joseph later (see 44:19), Judah claims that Joseph asked for the information about their family, making it possible that 42:13 leaves out some of the details of their first encounter.

[43:7]  6 tn Heb “and we told to him according to these words.”

[43:7]  7 tn The infinitive absolute emphasizes the imperfect verbal form, which here is a historic future (that is, future from the perspective of a past time).

[43:7]  8 tn Once again the imperfect verbal form is used as a historic future (that is, future from the perspective of past time).

[44:26]  4 tn The direct object is not specified in the Hebrew text, but is implied; “there” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[44:26]  5 tn Heb “go down.”

[47:6]  5 tn Heb “men of skill.”

[47:6]  6 tn Heb “make them rulers.”
