Genesis 26:7

26:7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he replied, “She is my sister.” ¹  He was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” for he thought to himself, ²  “The men of this place will kill me to get ³  Rebekah because she is very beautiful.”

Genesis 26:9

26:9 So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, “She is really ⁴  your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac replied, “Because I thought someone might kill me to get her.” ⁵ 

Genesis 29:13

29:13 When Laban heard this news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he rushed out to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob ⁶  told Laban how he was related to him. ⁷ 

Genesis 30:1

30:1 When Rachel saw that she could not give Jacob children, she ⁸  became jealous of her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children ⁹  or I’ll die!”

[26:7]  ¹ sn Rebekah, unlike Sarah, was not actually her husband’s sister.

[26:7]  ² tn Heb “lest.” The words “for he thought to himself” are supplied because the next clause is written with a first person pronoun, showing that Isaac was saying or thinking this.

[26:9]  ⁵ tn Heb “Because I said, ‘Lest I die on account of her.’” Since the verb “said” probably means “said to myself” (i.e., “thought”) here, the direct discourse in the Hebrew statement has been converted to indirect discourse in the translation. In addition the simple prepositional phrase “on account of her” has been clarified in the translation as “to get her” (cf. v. 7).

[29:13]  ⁷ tn Heb “he”; the referent (Jacob) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[29:13]  ⁸ tn Heb “and he told to Laban all these things.” This might mean Jacob told Laban how he happened to be there, but Laban’s response (see v. 14) suggests “all these things” refers to what Jacob had previously told Rachel (see v. 12).

[30:1]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “Rachel.” The proper name has been replaced by the pronoun (“she”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.
