Genesis 28:16

28:16 Then Jacob woke up ¹  and thought, ²  “Surely the Lord is in this place, but I did not realize it!”

Genesis 31:40

31:40 I was consumed by scorching heat ³  during the day and by piercing cold ⁴  at night, and I went without sleep. ⁵ 

[28:16]  ¹ tn Heb “woke up from his sleep.” This has been simplified in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[28:16]  ² tn Heb “said.”

[31:40]  ³ tn Or “by drought.”

[31:40]  ⁴ tn Heb “frost, ice,” though when contrasted with the חֹרֶב (khorev, “drought, parching heat”) of the day, “piercing cold” is more appropriate as a contrast.

[31:40]  ⁵ tn Heb “and my sleep fled from my eyes.”
