Genesis 30:1

Context

30:1 When Rachel saw that she could not give Jacob children, she 1  became jealous of her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children 2  or I’ll die!”

Genesis 38:16

Context
38:16 He turned aside to her along the road and said, “Come on! I want to have sex with you.” 3  (He did not realize 4  it was his daughter-in-law.) She asked, “What will you give me in exchange for having sex with you?” 5 

Genesis 47:15

Context
47:15 When the money from the lands of Egypt and Canaan was used up, all the Egyptians 6  came to Joseph and said, “Give us food! Why should we die 7  before your very eyes because our money has run out?”

[30:1]  1 tn Heb “Rachel.” The proper name has been replaced by the pronoun (“she”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[30:1]  2 tn Heb “sons.”

[38:16]  3 tn Heb “I will go to you.” The imperfect verbal form probably indicates his desire here. The expression “go to” is a euphemism for sexual intercourse.

[38:16]  4 tn Heb “for he did not know that.”

[38:16]  5 tn Heb “when you come to me.” This expression is a euphemism for sexual intercourse.

[47:15]  5 tn Heb “all Egypt.” The expression is a metonymy and refers to all the people of Egypt.

[47:15]  6 tn The imperfect verbal form has a deliberative force here.
