30:5 Bilhah became pregnant ¹  and gave Jacob a son. ²

30:19 Leah became pregnant again and gave Jacob a son for the sixth time. ⁵

30:23 She became pregnant ⁶  and gave birth to a son. Then she said, “God has taken away my shame.” ⁷ 

Genesis 38:3-4

38:3 She became pregnant ⁸  and had a son. Judah named ⁹  him Er. 38:4 She became pregnant again and had another son, whom she named Onan.

[30:10]  ³ tn Heb “and Zilpah, the servant of Leah, bore for Jacob a son.”

[30:19]  ⁷ tn Heb “and she bore a sixth son for Jacob,” i.e., this was the sixth son that Leah had given Jacob.

[30:23]  ⁹ tn Or “conceived.”

[30:23]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “my reproach.” A “reproach” is a cutting taunt or painful ridicule, but here it probably refers by metonymy to Rachel’s barren condition, which was considered shameful in this culture and was the reason why she was the object of taunting and ridicule.

[38:3]  ¹¹ tn Or “she conceived” (also in the following verse).

[38:3]  ¹² tc Some mss read this verb as feminine, “she called,” to match the pattern of the next two verses. But the MT, “he called,” should probably be retained as the more difficult reading.
