31:16 Surely all the wealth that God snatched away from our father belongs to us and to our children. So now do everything God has told you.”

Genesis 32:11

32:11 Rescue me, ¹  I pray, from the hand ²  of my brother Esau, ³  for I am afraid he will come ⁴  and attack me, as well as the mothers with their children. ⁵ 

Genesis 32:30

32:30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, ⁶  explaining, ⁷  “Certainly ⁸  I have seen God face to face ⁹  and have survived.” ¹⁰

[32:11]  ² tn The “hand” here is a metonymy for “power.”

[32:11]  ³ tn Heb “from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau.”

[32:11]  ⁴ tn Heb “for I am afraid of him, lest he come.”

[32:11]  ⁵ sn Heb “me, [the] mother upon [the] sons.” The first person pronoun “me” probably means here “me and mine,” as the following clause suggests.

[32:30]  ¹ sn The name Peniel means “face of God.” Since Jacob saw God face to face here, the name is appropriate.

[32:30]  ² tn The word “explaining” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[32:30]  ³ tn Or “because.”

[32:30]  ⁴ sn I have seen God face to face. See the note on the name “Peniel” earlier in the verse.

[32:30]  ⁵ tn Heb “and my soul [= life] has been preserved.”
