Genesis 31:7

31:7 but your father has humiliated ¹  me and changed my wages ten times. But God has not permitted him to do me any harm.

35:2 So Jacob told his household and all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have among you. ²  Purify yourselves and change your clothes. ³

Genesis 31:41

31:41 This was my lot ⁵  for twenty years in your house: I worked like a slave ⁶  for you – fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, but you changed my wages ten times!

[31:7]  ¹ tn This rare verb means “to make a fool of” someone. It involves deceiving someone so that their public reputation suffers (see Exod 8:25).

[35:2]  ² tn Heb “which are in your midst.”

[35:2]  ³ sn The actions of removing false gods, becoming ritually clean, and changing garments would become necessary steps in Israel when approaching the Lord in worship.

[41:14]  ³ tn Heb “and Pharaoh sent and called,” indicating a summons to the royal court.

[31:41]  ⁴ tn Heb “this to me.”

[31:41]  ⁵ tn Heb “served you,” but in this accusatory context the meaning is more “worked like a slave.”
