Genesis 32:10

32:10 I am not worthy of all the faithful love ¹  you have shown ²  your servant. With only my walking stick ³  I crossed the Jordan, ⁴  but now I have become two camps.

Genesis 50:11

50:11 When the Canaanites who lived in the land saw them mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a very sad occasion ⁵  for the Egyptians.” That is why its name was called ⁶  Abel Mizraim, ⁷  which is beyond the Jordan.

[32:10]  ³ tn Heb “for with my staff.” The Hebrew word מַקֵל (maqel), traditionally translated “staff,” has been rendered as “walking stick” because a “staff” in contemporary English refers typically to the support personnel in an organization.

[50:11]  ⁵ tn Heb “this is heavy mourning for Egypt.”

[50:11]  ⁶ tn The verb has no expressed subject and so it may be translated as passive.

[50:11]  ⁷ sn The name Abel Mizraim means “the mourning of Egypt.”
