48:7 But as for me, when I was returning from Paddan, Rachel died – to my sorrow 4  – in the land of Canaan. It happened along the way, some distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there on the way to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem). 5

[35:19]  1 sn This explanatory note links the earlier name Ephrath with the later name Bethlehem.

[35:16]  2 tn Heb “and there was still a stretch of the land to go to Ephrath.”

[35:16]  3 tn Normally the verb would be translated “she gave birth,” but because that obviously had not happened yet, it is better to translate the verb as ingressive, “began to give birth” (cf. NIV) or “went into labor.”

[48:7]  3 tn Heb “upon me, against me,” which might mean something like “to my sorrow.”
