[4:20]  1 tn Heb “father.” In this passage the word “father” means “founder,” referring to the first to establish such lifestyles and occupations.

[4:20]  2 tn The word “keep” is not in the Hebrew text, but is supplied in the translation. Other words that might be supplied instead are “tend,” “raise” (NIV), or “have” (NRSV).

[16:15]  3 tn Heb “and Abram called the name of his son whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.”

[19:37]  5 tn Heb “the firstborn.”

[19:37]  6 sn The meaning of the name Moab is not certain. The name sounds like the Hebrew phrase “from our father” (מֵאָבִינוּ, meavinu) which the daughters used twice (vv. 32, 34). This account is probably included in the narrative in order to portray the Moabites, who later became enemies of God’s people, in a negative light.

[21:2]  7 tn Or “she conceived.”

[30:7]  9 tn Heb “and she became pregnant again and Bilhah, the servant of Rachel, bore a second son for Jacob.”

[30:17]  11 tn Heb “listened to.”

[30:17]  12 tn Or “she conceived” (also in v. 19).

[30:17]  13 tn Heb “and she bore for Jacob a fifth son,” i.e., this was the fifth son that Leah had given Jacob.

[38:5]  13 tn Heb “and she added again and she gave birth.” The first verb and the adverb emphasize that she gave birth once more.

[38:5]  14 tn Or “and he [i.e., Judah] was in Kezib when she gave birth to him.”
