[6:21]  1 tn The verb is a direct imperative: “And you, take for yourself.” The form stresses the immediate nature of the instruction; the pronoun underscores the directness.

[6:21]  2 tn Heb “from all food,” meaning “some of every kind of food.”

[6:21]  3 tn Or “will be eaten.”

[6:21]  4 tn Heb “and gather it to you.”

[9:3]  5 tn Heb “every moving thing that lives for you will be for food.”

[9:3]  6 tn The words “I gave you” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[9:3]  7 tn The perfect verb form describes the action that accompanies the declaration.

[1:29]  9 tn The text uses הִנֵּה (hinneh), often archaically translated “behold.” It is often used to express the dramatic present, the immediacy of an event – “Look, this is what I am doing!”

[1:29]  10 sn G. J. Wenham (Genesis [WBC], 1:34) points out that there is nothing in the passage that prohibits the man and the woman from eating meat. He suggests that eating meat came after the fall. Gen 9:3 may then ratify the postfall practice of eating meat rather than inaugurate the practice, as is often understood.

[1:30]  13 tn The phrase “I give” is not in the Hebrew text but has been supplied in the translation for clarification.
