[3:12]  1 tn Or “take care.”

[3:12]  2 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 2:11.

[3:12]  3 tn Grk “that there not be in any of you.”

[3:12]  4 tn Or “deserts,” “rebels against.”

[3:12]  5 tn Grk “in forsaking the living God.”

[78:8]  6 tn Heb “a generation that did not make firm its heart and whose spirit was not faithful with God.” The expression “make firm the heart” means “to be committed, devoted” (see 1 Sam 7:3).

[28:7]  7 tn Heb “these.” The demonstrative pronoun anticipates “priests and prophets” two lines later.

[28:7]  8 tn According to HALOT 135 s.v. III בלע, the verb form is derived from בָּלַע (bala’, “confuse”), not the more common בָּלַע (“swallow”). See earlier notes at 3:12 and 9:16.

[28:7]  9 tn Heb “in the seeing.”

[28:7]  10 tn Heb “[in] giving a decision.”

[4:12]  11 tn Heb “adultery.” The adjective “spiritual” is supplied in the translation to clarify that apostasy is meant here.

[3:19]  12 tn Or “this is the reason for God judging,” or “this is how judgment works.”

[3:19]  13 tn Grk “and men,” but in a generic sense, referring to people of both genders (as “everyone” in v. 20 makes clear).

[8:45]  14 tn Or “because I tell you.”

[1:28]  15 tn Grk “and just as they did not approve to have God in knowledge.”

[1:28]  16 tn Grk “the things that are improper.”

[1:2]  17 tn Grk “the gospel of God, which he promised.” Because of the length and complexity of this sentence in Greek, it was divided into shorter English sentences in keeping with contemporary English style. To indicate the referent of the relative pronoun (“which”), the word “gospel” was repeated at the beginning of v. 2.

[2:10]  18 tn Grk “but even,” to emphasize the contrast. The second word has been omitted since it is somewhat redundant in English idiom.

[2:12]  19 sn This is the first occurrence of law (nomos) in Romans. Exactly what Paul means by the term has been the subject of much scholarly debate. According to J. A. Fitzmyer (Romans [AB], 131-35; 305-6) there are at least four different senses: (1) figurative, as a “principle”; (2) generic, meaning “a law”; (3) as a reference to the OT or some part of the OT; and (4) as a reference to the Mosaic law. This last usage constitutes the majority of Paul’s references to “law” in Romans.
