[6:12]  1 tn Or “dull.”

[6:17]  2 tn Grk “in which.”

[6:17]  3 tn Or “immutable” (here and in v. 18); Grk “the unchangeableness of his purpose.”

[8:17]  4 tn Grk “on the one hand, heirs of God; on the other hand, fellow heirs with Christ.” Some prefer to render v. 17 as follows: “And if children, then heirs – that is, heirs of God. Also fellow heirs with Christ if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.” Such a translation suggests two distinct inheritances, one coming to all of God’s children, the other coming only to those who suffer with Christ. The difficulty of this view, however, is that it ignores the correlative conjunctions μένδέ (mende, “on the one hand…on the other hand”): The construction strongly suggests that the inheritances cannot be separated since both explain “then heirs.” For this reason, the preferred translation puts this explanation in parentheses.

[3:7]  5 tn Grk “know.”

[3:7]  6 tn The phrase “sons of Abraham” is used here in a figurative sense to describe people who are connected to a personality, Abraham, by close nonmaterial ties. It is this personality that has defined the relationship and its characteristics (BDAG 1024-25 s.v. υἱός 2.c.α).

[3:9]  7 tn Grk “those who are by faith,” with the Greek expression “by faith” (ἐκ πίστεως, ek pistew") the same as the expression in v. 8.

[3:29]  8 tn Grk “seed.” See the note on the first occurrence of the word “descendant” in 3:16.

[3:6]  9 sn The phrase through the gospel is placed last in the sentence in Greek for emphasis. It has been moved forward for clarity.

[3:6]  10 tn Grk “and fellow members.”

[3:7]  11 tn This is the conclusion of a single, skillfully composed sentence in Greek encompassing Titus 3:4-7. Showing the goal of God’s merciful salvation, v. 7 begins literally, “in order that, being justified…we might become heirs…”

[3:7]  12 tn Grk “heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

[2:5]  13 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:2.

[2:1]  14 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:2.

[2:1]  15 tn Or “partiality.”

[2:1]  16 tn Grk “do not have faith with personal prejudice,” with emphasis on the last phrase.

[2:1]  17 tn Grk “our Lord Jesus Christ of glory.” Here δόξης (doxhs) has been translated as an attributive genitive.

[3:7]  18 tn Grk (plurals), “every kind of animals and birds, of reptiles and sea creatures.”

[3:7]  19 tn Grk “the human species.”
