Isaiah 1:13

Context

1:13 Do not bring any more meaningless 1  offerings;

I consider your incense detestable! 2

You observe new moon festivals, Sabbaths, and convocations,

but I cannot tolerate sin-stained celebrations! 3

Isaiah 15:9

Context

15:9 Indeed, the waters of Dimon 4  are full of blood!

Indeed, I will heap even more trouble on Dimon. 5

A lion will attack 6  the Moabite fugitives

and the people left in the land.

Isaiah 23:12

Context

23:12 He said,

“You will no longer celebrate,

oppressed 7  virgin daughter Sidon!

Get up, travel to Cyprus,

but you will find no relief there.” 8

Isaiah 24:20

Context

24:20 The earth will stagger around 9  like a drunk;

it will sway back and forth like a hut in a windstorm. 10

Its sin will weigh it down,

and it will fall and never get up again.

Isaiah 29:14

Context

29:14 Therefore I will again do an amazing thing for these people –

an absolutely extraordinary deed. 11

Wise men will have nothing to say,

the sages will have no explanations.” 12

Isaiah 47:5

[1:13]  1 tn Or “worthless” (NASB, NCV, CEV); KJV, ASV “vain.”

[1:13]  2 sn Notice some of the other practices that Yahweh regards as “detestable”: homosexuality (Lev 18:22-30; 20:13), idolatry (Deut 7:25; 13:15), human sacrifice (Deut 12:31), eating ritually unclean animals (Deut 14:3-8), sacrificing defective animals (Deut 17:1), engaging in occult activities (Deut 18:9-14), and practicing ritual prostitution (1 Kgs 14:23).

[1:13]  3 tn Heb “sin and assembly” (these two nouns probably represent a hendiadys). The point is that their attempts at worship are unacceptable to God because the people’s everyday actions in the socio-economic realm prove they have no genuine devotion to God (see vv. 16-17).

[15:9]  4 tc The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa reads “Dibon” instead of “Dimon” in this verse.

[15:9]  5 tn Heb “Indeed I will place on Dimon added things.” Apparently the Lord is speaking.

[15:9]  6 tn The words “will attack” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[23:12]  7 tn Or “violated, raped,” the point being that Daughter Sidon has lost her virginity in the most brutal manner possible.

[23:12]  8 tn Heb “[to the] Kittim, get up, cross over; even there there will be no rest for you.” On “Kittim” see the note on “Cyprus” at v. 1.

[24:20]  10 tn Heb “staggering, staggers.” The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute before the finite verb for emphasis and sound play.

[24:20]  11 tn The words “in a windstorm” are supplied in the translation to clarify the metaphor.

[29:14]  13 tn Heb “Therefore I will again do something amazing with these people, an amazing deed, an amazing thing.” This probably refers to the amazing transformation predicted in vv. 17-24, which will follow the purifying judgment implied in vv. 15-16.

[29:14]  14 tn Heb “the wisdom of their wise ones will perish, the discernment of their discerning ones will keep hidden.”

[47:5]  16 tn Heb “darkness,” which may indicate a place of hiding where a fugitive would seek shelter and protection.

[47:5]  17 tn Or “For” (NASB, NRSV).
