[10:7] 1 tn Heb “but he, not so does he intend, and his heart, not so does it think.”
[10:7] 2 tn Heb “for to destroy [is] in his heart, and to cut off nations, not a few.”
[12:4] 3 tn Or “in that day” (KJV).
[12:4] 4 tn Heb “call in his name,” i.e., “invoke his name.”
[12:4] 5 tn Heb “bring to remembrance that his name is exalted.” The Lord’s “name” stands here for his character and reputation.
[14:12] 5 tn The Hebrew text has הֵילֵל בֶּן־שָׁחַר (helel ben-shakhar, “Helel son of Shachar”), which is probably a name for the morning star (Venus) or the crescent moon. See HALOT 245 s.v. הֵילֵל.
[14:12] 6 tn Some understand the verb to from חָלַשׁ (khalash, “to weaken”), but HALOT 324 s.v. II חלשׁ proposes a homonym here, meaning “to defeat.”
[14:12] 7 sn In this line the taunting kings hint at the literal identity of the king, after likening him to the god Helel and a tree. The verb גָדַע (gada’, “cut down”) is used of chopping down trees in 9:10 and 10:33.
[14:16] 7 tn The word “thinking” is supplied in the translation in order to make it clear that the next line records their thoughts as they gaze at him.
[23:3] 9 tc The Hebrew text (23:2b-3a) reads literally, “merchant of Sidon, the one who crosses the sea, they filled you, and on the deep waters.” Instead of מִלְאוּךְ (mil’ukh, “they filled you”) the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa reads מלאכיך (“your messengers”). The translation assumes an emendation of מִלְאוּךְ to מַלְאָכָו (mal’akhav, “his messengers”), taking the vav (ו) on וּבְמַיִם (uvÿmayim) as improperly placed; instead it should be the final letter of the preceding word.
[23:3] 10 tn Heb “seed of Shihor.” “Shihor” probably refers to the east branch of the Nile. See Jer 2:18 and BDB 1009 s.v. שִׁיחוֹר.
[23:3] 11 tn Heb “the harvest of the Nile.”
[23:3] 12 tn Heb “[is] her revenue.”
[23:3] 13 tn Heb “merchandise”; KJV, ASV “a mart of nations”; NLT “the merchandise mart of the world.”
[40:15] 11 tn Or “weighs” (NIV); NLT “picks up.”
[40:15] 12 tn Or “islands” (NASB, NIV, NLT).
[45:6] 13 tn The words “I do this” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
[45:6] 14 tn Heb “they” (so KJV, ASV); TEV, CEV “everyone”; NLT “all the world.”
[47:7] 15 tn Heb “Forever I [will be] permanent queen”; NIV “the eternal queen”; CEV “queen forever.”
[47:7] 16 tn Heb “you did not set these things upon your heart [or “mind”].”
[47:7] 17 tn Heb “you did not remember its outcome”; NAB “you disregarded their outcome.”
[49:1] 17 tn Or “islands” (NASB, NIV); NLT “in far-off lands.”
[49:1] 18 tn Heb “called me from the womb.”
[49:1] 19 tn Heb “from the inner parts of my mother he mentioned my name.”
[57:9] 19 tn Heb “you journey with oil.”
[57:9] 20 tn Heb “the king.” Since the context refers to idolatry and child sacrifice (see v. 5), some emend מֶלֶך (melekh, “king”) to “Molech.” Perhaps Israel’s devotion to her idols is likened here to a subject taking tribute to a ruler.
[57:9] 21 tn Heb “and you multiply your perfumes.”
[57:9] 22 sn Israel’s devotion to her idols is inordinate, irrational, and self-destructive.
