Isaiah 13:3

Context

13:3 I have given orders to my chosen soldiers; 1 

I have summoned the warriors through whom I will vent my anger, 2 

my boasting, arrogant ones. 3

[13:3]  1 tn Heb “my consecrated ones,” i.e., those who have been set apart by God for the special task of carrying out his judgment.

[26:12]  11 tc Some suggest emending גַּם כָּל (gam kol, “even all”) to כִּגְמֻל (kigmul, “according to the deed[s] of”) One might then translate “for according to what our deeds deserve, you have acted on our behalf.” Nevertheless, accepting the MT as it stands, the prophet affirms that Yahweh deserved all the credit for anything Israel had accomplished.

[28:29]  13 sn Verses 23-29 emphasize that God possesses great wisdom and has established a natural order. Evidence of this can be seen in the way farmers utilize divinely imparted wisdom to grow and harvest crops. God’s dealings with his people will exhibit this same kind of wisdom and order. Judgment will be accomplished according to a divinely ordered timetable and, while severe enough, will not be excessive. Judgment must come, just as planting inevitably follows plowing. God will, as it were, thresh his people, but he will not crush them to the point where they will be of no use to him.

[43:13]  16 tn Heb “hand” (so KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV); NLT “No one can oppose what I do.”

[45:16]  19 tn “together they will walk in humiliation, the makers of images.”

[47:3]  22 tn Heb “Your shame will be seen.” In this context “shame” is a euphemism referring to the genitals.

[47:3]  23 tn Heb “I will not meet a man.” The verb פָּגַע (pagah) apparently carries the nuance “meet with kindness” here (cf. 64:5, and see BDB 803 s.v. Qal.2).

[49:15]  25 tn Heb “her suckling”; NASB “her nursing child.”

[49:15]  26 tn Heb “so as not to have compassion on the son of her womb?”

[49:15]  27 tn Heb “these” (so ASV, NASB).

[49:15]  28 sn The argument of v. 15 seems to develop as follows: The Lord has an innate attachment to Zion, just like a mother does for her infant child. But even if mothers were to suddenly abandon their children, the Lord would never forsake Zion. In other words, the Lord’s attachment to Zion is like a mother’s attachment to her infant child, but even stronger.
