Isaiah 13:8

13:8 They panic –

cramps and pain seize hold of them

like those of a woman who is straining to give birth.

They look at one another in astonishment;

their faces are flushed red. ¹

14:1 The Lord will certainly have compassion on Jacob; ²  he will again choose Israel as his special people ³  and restore ⁴  them to their land. Resident foreigners will join them and unite with the family ⁵  of Jacob.

The Assyrians have made it a home for wild animals.

47:10 You were complacent in your evil deeds; ¹⁰ 

you thought, ¹¹  ‘No one sees me.’

Your self-professed ¹²  wisdom and knowledge lead you astray,

when you say, ‘I am unique! No one can compare to me!’ ¹³ 

Isaiah 47:12-13

47:12 Persist ¹⁴  in trusting ¹⁵  your amulets

and your many incantations,

which you have faithfully recited ¹⁶  since your youth!

Maybe you will be successful ¹⁷  –

maybe you will scare away disaster. ¹⁸ 

47:13 You are tired out from listening to so much advice. ¹⁹ 

Let them take their stand –

the ones who see omens in the sky,

who gaze at the stars,

who make monthly predictions –

let them rescue you from the disaster that is about to overtake you! ²⁰

[14:1]  ² tn The sentence begins with כִּי (ki), which is understood as asseverative (“certainly”) in the translation. Another option is to translate, “For the Lord will have compassion.” In this case one of the reasons for Babylon’s coming demise (13:22b) is the Lord’s desire to restore his people.
