14:14 I will climb up to the tops ¹  of the clouds;

The Lord Gives a Warning

45:9 One who argues with his creator is in grave danger, ⁶ 

one who is like a mere ⁷  shard among the other shards on the ground!

The clay should not say to the potter, ⁸ 

“What in the world ⁹  are you doing?

Your work lacks skill!” ¹⁰ 

[14:14]  ¹ tn Heb “the high places.” This word often refers to the high places where pagan worship was conducted, but here it probably refers to the “backs” or tops of the clouds. See HALOT 136 s.v. בָּמָה.

[14:14]  ² sn Normally in the OT the title “Most High” belongs to the God of Israel, but in this context, where the mythological overtones are so strong, it probably refers to the Canaanite high god El.

[15:9]  ³ tc The Qumran scroll 1QIsa^a reads “Dibon” instead of “Dimon” in this verse.

[15:9]  ⁴ tn Heb “Indeed I will place on Dimon added things.” Apparently the Lord is speaking.

[15:9]  ⁵ tn The words “will attack” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[45:9]  ⁵ tn Heb “Woe [to] the one who argues with the one who formed him.”

[45:9]  ⁶ tn The words “one who is like a mere” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons and clarification.

[45:9]  ⁷ tn Heb “Should the clay say to the one who forms it?” The rhetorical question anticipates a reply, “Of course not!”

[45:9]  ⁸ tn The words “in the world” are supplied in the translation to approximate in English idiom the force of the sarcastic question.

[45:9]  ⁹ tn Heb “your work, there are no hands for it,” i.e., “your work looks like something made by a person who has no hands.”
