Isaiah 15:5

Context

15:5 My heart cries out because of Moab’s plight, 1

and for the fugitives 2  stretched out 3  as far as Zoar and Eglath Shelishiyah.

For they weep as they make their way up the ascent of Luhith;

they loudly lament their demise on the road to Horonaim. 4

Isaiah 33:21

33:21 Instead the Lord will rule there as our mighty king. 5

Rivers and wide streams will flow through it; 6

no war galley will enter; 7

no large ships will sail through. 8

Isaiah 37:10

Context
37:10 “Tell King Hezekiah of Judah this: ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust mislead you when he says, “Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.”

Isaiah 44:23

Context

44:23 Shout for joy, O sky, for the Lord intervenes; 9

shout out, you subterranean regions 10  of the earth.

O mountains, give a joyful shout;

you too, O forest and all your trees! 11

For the Lord protects 12  Jacob;

he reveals his splendor through Israel. 13

Isaiah 62:8

Context

62:8 The Lord swears an oath by his right hand,

by his strong arm: 14

and foreigners will not drink your wine,

which you worked hard to produce.

Isaiah 65:8

Context

65:8 This is what the Lord says:

“When 15  juice is discovered in a cluster of grapes,

someone says, ‘Don’t destroy it, for it contains juice.’ 16

So I will do for the sake of my servants –

I will not destroy everyone. 17

[15:5]  1 tn Heb “for Moab.” For rhetorical purposes the speaker (the Lord?, see v. 9) plays the role of a mourner.

[15:5]  2 tn The vocalization of the Hebrew text suggests “the bars of her gates,” but the form should be repointed to yield, “her fugitives.” See HALOT 156-57 s.v. בָּרִחַ, and BDB 138 s.v. בָּרִיהַ.

[15:5]  3 tn The words “are stretched out” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[15:5]  4 tn Heb “For the ascent of Luhith, with weeping they go up it; for [on] the road to Horonaim an outcry over shattering they raise up.”

[33:21]  5 tn Heb “But there [as] a mighty one [will be] the Lord for us.”

[33:21]  6 tn Heb “a place of rivers, streams wide of hands [i.e., on both sides].”

[33:21]  7 tn Heb “a ship of rowing will not go into it.”

[33:21]  8 tn Heb “and a mighty ship will not pass through it.”

[44:23]  9 tn Heb “acts”; NASB, NRSV “has done it”; NLT “has done this wondrous thing.”

[44:23]  10 tn Heb “lower regions.” This refers to Sheol and forms a merism with “sky” in the previous line. See Pss 63:9; 71:20.

[44:23]  11 tn Heb “O forest and all the trees in it”; NASB, NRSV “and every tree in it.”

[44:23]  12 tn Heb “redeems.” See the note at 41:14.

[44:23]  13 tn That is, by delivering Israel. Cf. NCV “showed his glory when he saved Israel”; TEV “has shown his greatness by saving his people Israel.”

[62:8]  13 tn The Lord’s right hand and strong arm here symbolize his power and remind the audience that his might guarantees the fulfillment of the following promise.

[65:8]  17 tn Heb “just as.” In the Hebrew text the statement is one long sentence, “Just as…, so I will do….”

[65:8]  18 tn Heb “for a blessing is in it.”

[65:8]  19 tn Heb “by not destroying everyone.”
