Isaiah 19:20

Context
19:20 It 1  will become a visual reminder in the land of Egypt of 2  the Lord who commands armies. When they cry out to the Lord because of oppressors, he will send them a deliverer and defender 3  who will rescue them.

Isaiah 30:8

30:8 Now go, write it 4  down on a tablet in their presence, 5 

inscribe it on a scroll,

so that it might be preserved for a future time

as an enduring witness. 6 

Isaiah 43:9

Context

43:9 All nations gather together,

the peoples assemble.

Who among them announced this?

Who predicted earlier events for us? 7 

Let them produce their witnesses to testify they were right;

let them listen and affirm, ‘It is true.’

Isaiah 43:12

Context

43:12 I decreed and delivered and proclaimed,

and there was no other god among you.

You are my witnesses,” says the Lord, “that I am God.

Isaiah 44:8-9

Context

44:8 Don’t panic! Don’t be afraid! 8 

Did I not tell you beforehand and decree it?

You are my witnesses! Is there any God but me?

There is no other sheltering rock; 9  I know of none.

44:9 All who form idols are nothing;

the things in which they delight are worthless.

Their witnesses cannot see;

they recognize nothing, so they are put to shame.

[19:20]  1 tn The masculine noun מִזְבֵּחַ (mizbbeakh, “altar”) in v. 19 is probably the subject of the masculine singular verb הָיָה (hayah) rather than the feminine noun מַצֵּבָה (matsevah, “sacred pillar”), also in v. 19.

[19:20]  2 tn Heb “a sign and a witness to the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts] in the land of Egypt.”

[19:20]  3 tn רָב (rav) is a substantival participle (from רִיב, riv) meaning “one who strives, contends.”

[30:8]  4 tn The referent of the third feminine singular pronominal suffix is uncertain. Perhaps it refers to the preceding message, which accuses the people of rejecting the Lord’s help in favor of an alliance with Egypt.

[30:8]  5 tn Heb “with them.” On the use of the preposition here, see BDB 86 s.v. II אֵת.

[30:8]  6 sn Recording the message will enable the prophet to use it in the future as evidence that God warned his people of impending judgment and clearly spelled out the nation’s guilt. An official record of the message will also serve as proof of the prophet’s authority as God’s spokesman.

[43:9]  7 tn Heb “and the former things was causing us to hear?”

[44:8]  10 tn BDB 923 s.v. רָהָה derives this verb from an otherwise unattested root, while HALOT 403 s.v. יָרָה defines it as “be stupefied” on the basis of an Arabic cognate. The form is likely a corruption of תיראו, the reading attested in the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa.

[44:8]  11 tn Heb “rock” or “rocky cliff,” a title that depicts God as a protective refuge in his role as sovereign king; thus the translation “sheltering rock.”
