Isaiah 2:13

2:13 for all the cedars of Lebanon,

that are so high and mighty,

for all the oaks of Bashan; ¹

14:8 The evergreens also rejoice over your demise, ² 

as do the cedars of Lebanon, singing, ³ 

‘Since you fell asleep, ⁴ 

no woodsman comes up to chop us down!’ ⁵ 

[2:13]  ¹ sn The cedars of Lebanon and oaks of Bashan were well-known for their size and prominence. They make apt symbols here for powerful men who think of themselves as prominent and secure.

[14:8]  ² tn Heb “concerning you.”

[14:8]  ³ tn The word “singing” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. Note that the personified trees speak in the second half of the verse.

[14:8]  ⁴ tn Heb “lay down” (in death); cf. NAB “laid to rest.”

[14:8]  ⁵ tn Heb “the [wood]cutter does not come up against us.”
