Isaiah 2:3

Context

2:3 many peoples will come and say,

“Come, let us go up to the Lord’s mountain,

to the temple of the God of Jacob,

so 1  he can teach us his requirements, 2

and 3  we can follow his standards.” 4

For Zion will be the center for moral instruction; 5

the Lord will issue edicts from Jerusalem. 6

Isaiah 7:3

Context
7:3 So the Lord told Isaiah, “Go out with your son Shear-jashub 7  and meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit of the upper pool which is located on the road to the field where they wash and dry cloth. 8

Isaiah 26:21

26:21 For look, the Lord is coming out of the place where he lives, 9

to punish the sin of those who live on the earth.

The earth will display the blood shed on it;

it will no longer cover up its slain. 10

Isaiah 36:16

Because of his absolute power and awesome strength,

not one of them is missing.

Isaiah 48:1

and are descended from Judah, 16

who take oaths in the name of the Lord,

and invoke 17  the God of Israel –

but not in an honest and just manner. 18

Isaiah 55:11

[2:3]  1 tn The prefixed verb form with simple vav (ו) introduces a purpose/result clause after the preceding prefixed verb form (probably to be taken as a cohortative; see IBHS 650 §39.2.2a).

[2:3]  2 tn Heb “his ways.” In this context God’s “ways” are the standards of moral conduct he decrees that people should live by.

[2:3]  3 tn The cohortative with vav (ו) after the prefixed verb form indicates the ultimate purpose/goal of their action.

[2:3]  4 tn Heb “walk in his ways.”

[2:3]  5 tn Heb “for out of Zion will go instruction.”

[2:3]  6 tn Heb “the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”

[7:3]  7 tn The name means “a remnant will return.” Perhaps in this context, where the Lord is trying to encourage Ahaz, the name suggests that only a few of the enemy invaders will return home; the rest will be defeated.

[7:3]  8 tn Heb “the field of the washer”; traditionally “the fuller’s field” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NRSV); NIV “the Washerman’s Field.”

[26:21]  13 tn Heb “out of his place” (so KJV, ASV).

[26:21]  14 sn This implies that rampant bloodshed is one of the reasons for divine judgment. See the note at 24:5.

[36:16]  19 tn Heb “make with me a blessing and come out to me.”

[40:26]  25 tn Heb “Lift on high your eyes and see.”

[40:26]  26 tn The words “heavenly lights” are supplied in the translation for clarification. See the following lines.

[40:26]  27 tn Heb “the one who brings out by number their host.” The stars are here likened to a huge army that the Lord leads out. Perhaps the next line pictures God calling roll. If so, the final line may be indicating that none of them dares “go AWOL.” (“AWOL” is a military acronym for “absent without leave.”)

[48:1]  31 tn Heb “house of Jacob”; TEV, CEV “people of Israel.”

[48:1]  32 tc The Hebrew text reads literally “and from the waters of Judah came out.” מִמֵּי (mimme) could be a corruption of מִמְּעֵי (mimmÿe, “from the inner parts of”; cf. NASB, NIV, NLT, NRSV) as suggested in the above translation. Some translations (ESV, NKJV) retain the MT reading because the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa, which corrects a similar form to “from inner parts of” in 39:7, does not do it here.

[48:1]  33 tn Heb “cause to remember”; KJV, ASV “make mention of.”

[48:1]  34 tn Heb “not in truth and not in righteousness.”

[55:11]  37 tn Heb “so is the word which goes out from my mouth, it does not return to empty.” “Word” refers here to divine promises, like the ones made just prior to and after this (see vv. 7b, 12-13).

[55:11]  38 tn Heb “but it accomplishes what I desire, and succeeds [on the mission] which I send it.”
