Isaiah 2:8

[5:19]  2 tn Heb “let his work hurry, let it hasten.” The pronoun “his” refers to God, as the parallel line makes clear. The reference to his “work” alludes back to v. 12, which refers to his ‘work” of judgment. With these words the people challenged the prophet’s warning of approaching judgment. They were in essence saying that they saw no evidence that God was about to work in such a way.

[5:19]  4 tn Heb “draw near” (so NASB); NRSV “hasten to fulfillment.”

[19:15]  3 tn Heb “And there will not be for Egypt a deed, which head and tail, shoot and stalk can do.” In 9:14-15 the phrase “head or tail” refers to leaders and prophets, respectively. This interpretation makes good sense in this context, where both leaders and advisers (probably including prophets and diviners) are mentioned (vv. 11-14). Here, as in 9:14, “shoots and stalk” picture a reed, which symbolizes the leadership of the nation in its entirety.

[26:12]  4 tn Heb “O Lord, you establish peace for us.”

[26:12]  5 tc Some suggest emending גַּם כָּל (gam kol, “even all”) to כִּגְמֻל (kigmul, “according to the deed[s] of”) One might then translate “for according to what our deeds deserve, you have acted on our behalf.” Nevertheless, accepting the MT as it stands, the prophet affirms that Yahweh deserved all the credit for anything Israel had accomplished.

[32:17]  5 tn Heb “and the product of fairness will be peace.”

[32:17]  6 tn Heb “and the work of fairness [will be] calmness and security forever.”

[60:21]  6 tn Or “righteous” (NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); NAB “just.”
