Isaiah 20:6

20:6 At that time ¹  those who live on this coast ²  will say, ‘Look what has happened to our source of hope to whom we fled for help, expecting to be rescued from the king of Assyria! How can we escape now?’”

Isaiah 29:13

29:13 The sovereign master ³  says,

“These people say they are loyal to me; ⁴ 

they say wonderful things about me, ⁵ 

but they are not really loyal to me. ⁶ 

Their worship consists of

nothing but man-made ritual. ⁷ 

Isaiah 36:4

36:4 The chief adviser said to them, “Tell Hezekiah: ‘This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: “What is your source of confidence? ⁸ 

Isaiah 36:6-7

36:6 Look, you must be trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed staff. If someone leans on it for support, it punctures his hand and wounds him. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt does to all who trust in him! 36:7 Perhaps you will tell me, ‘We are trusting in the Lord our God.’ But Hezekiah is the one who eliminated his high places and altars and then told the people of Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You must worship at this altar.’

Isaiah 37:3

37:3 “This is what Hezekiah says: ⁹  ‘This is a day of distress, insults, ¹⁰  and humiliation, ¹¹  as when a baby is ready to leave the birth canal, but the mother lacks the strength to push it through. ¹² 

Isaiah 39:6

39:6 ‘Look, a time is coming when everything in your palace and the things your ancestors ¹³  have accumulated to this day will be carried away to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the Lord.

[20:6]  ² sn This probably refers to the coastal region of Philistia (cf. TEV).

[29:13]  ³ tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonai).

[29:13]  ⁵ tn Heb “and with their lips they honor me.”

[29:13]  ⁶ tn Heb “but their heart is far from me.” The heart is viewed here as the seat of the will, from which genuine loyalty derives.
